Video Game Review #581: Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Nostalgia Factor:

I first played this game back in 2002. I vaguely remember there being a little bit of gameplay on a demo disc that came with my new PlayStation 2. My initial reaction was amazement, as the game looked a thousand times better than anything seen on the PS1. Compare, for example, a screenshot of Croc or Jersey Devil with a screenshot of this game. You can see that a massive, massive leap in technology had occurred when going from the PS1 to PS2.

I ended up buying this game shortly thereafter. I really enjoyed it from start to finish. I would end up revisiting it and beating it a couple of times over the years. My memories of the game have been nothing but positive. I would play the sequels as well, but I was always lukewarm on them. To me, the original Jak and Daxter has always been the pinnacle of the series.

My last time playing through this game was back in 2012. So it's been a good 13 years since my last playthrough of Jak and Daxter. What better time than now, as I clear out my backlog, to come back to it and add it to my list of games completed and reviewed? Let's dive in.




Story:

I've never been overly concerned with the story of this game. You play as Jak. He has a small, annoying companion named Daxter. When the duo venture to an island they've been warned to stay away from, Daxter falls into a pool of "dark ico" and is transformed into a tiny, orange animal that resembles a weasel or an otter. The game's Wiki refers to him as an "ottsel."

Jak and Daxter embark on a journey to find the sage that can turn Daxter back into a human. In order to advance on their journey, they must collect power cells. These power cells power the shield for Jak and Daxter's motorcycle thingie as it races through volcanic territory. At the end of the game, Jak and Daxter must rescue the sages from Gol and Maia - the game's bad guys. Gol and Maia are looking to use the powerful dark ico for their own nefarious purposes.

Once the sages have been freed, they combine their powers to help defeat the bad guys. Unfortunately, the means to turn Daxter back into a human are destroyed in the process. At the end of the game, a mysterious Precursor gate is discovered. I forgot to mention this fact, but the entire game hinges around the idea that there were powerful "Precursors" who used advanced technology, that used to live on this land long before the time of Jak and Daxter.

If you collected all 100 power cells, a secret ending is unlocked where the gate is opened, and a mysterious light shines behind it. If you don't have 100 cells, you are unable to open the gate and the game ends with them just being like "hmm I wonder what this thing is?'




Gameplay:

I was a little hesitant to step back into the world of Jak and Daxter. But very quickly, all concerns over the game "aging poorly" evaporated. This game is a blast. It's easy to pick up and play. The controls are simple. It's fun to look at. It sounds good. The whole experience is just very welcoming. I fell down that rabbit hole so darn fast.

For those unfamiliar with the game, it is a 3D platformer. There is a hub world where you can talk to villagers and turn in collectibles for power cells. For a point of reference, power cells essentially act like stars in 3D Mario games. Branching out from the hub world are the game's individual stages. The transition from the hub world to a stage is seamless. No loading times, no stoppage of play. You just walk right into it. Let's say you are in the village and you notice a little path on the beach. Follow that path and you find yourself in the first stage of the game. Definitely one of the smoothest "hub to stage" transitions I've ever seen in a game - and this game does it multiple times.

Each stage is filled with orbs to collect. You can give these orbs to certain NPCs throughout the game in exchange for power cells. You can also turn them in at these big skull totems for additional power cells. The point is, you want to collect as many of these orbs as possible, and use them to collect as many power cells as possible.

Power cells themselves are scattered throughout each stage. There are generally six or seven of them per stage. Again, they act like stars in a Mario game. You can usually collect one for completing a stage-specific task, or by beating a boss character. Each stage also contains boxes with mechanical flies in them. Collect all 7 and you get a power cell. These boxes act like red coins in Super Mario 64 or the Jinjos in Banjo-Kazooie, if you are looking for further points of reference.

The game itself is pretty quick to play through, and not too horribly challenging. You have unlimited lives, and the game is pretty generous with its save points. So you can play as recklessly as you want. If you see a ledge but you aren't sure if you can make it or not, there is nothing stopping you from attempting that jump. Worst case scenario, you die and come back to your most recent checkpoint, which probably was not too far back. 

If I had to offer one criticism, it would be how some of the stage objectives are not very clear. Often, you need to collect a power-up or unlock a way forward before you can advance, and the way to do this is to leave your current stage and move onto another one. It's a common thing in Metroidvania games. You see somewhere you can't get to, so you leave and come back later. But there is no indication in THIS game that you ever need to do that. For example, in the first level, there is a platform that you obviously need to activate to get to the next power cell. But in order to do this, you have to leave the stage, gain an additional power, and come back later. But like I said, the game doesn't indicate this. I wasted soooo much time trying to collect that last power cell, when it couldn't even be done anyway. I ended up leaving out of frustration. When the answer became clear later on in the game, I got slightly annoyed that I had wasted so much time on something that couldn't be done.

Slight camera gripes aside, there isn't much else to complain about regarding this game. I had a surprisingly fun time playing through it. "You know what? This is almost a perfect platformer. I can't think of anything bad to say about this game" was something that crossed my mind multiple times playing through it. Even the areas of the game that annoyed me when I was younger (like the bike racing scenes) I found enjoyable this time around. I was almost never not having fun. And that's a testament to this game's strong design.

Before we move on, I want to say that my five year old son Channing was very interested in watching me play. He did not like the cutscenes and thought they were "boring", although he did enjoy the physical comedy surrounding Daxter's transformation. He fell down the rabbit hole with me, telling me to "go there" and "get that!" Finding power cells and watching the characters dance became his favorite part of the game. It's nice that I am finally able to create some gaming memories with my son, even though he still is not interested in playing them himself yet. This game and Far Cry 4 have probably been his favorites so far.




Graphics:

I'm surprised by how well this game looks in present day. It is very sharp. Very bright and colorful. The detail put into the scenery and the landscapes of the game makes this feel like a real cartoon world. And then the character design and animation brings everything to life.




Sound:

This game has some really solid music and sound effects. The stage music is all very well done. I'd hesitate to call it "great" however, because even though I vibed with the music as I was playing, none of it has stuck in my head post-game. What I remember the most is the little jingle that plays when you collect a power cell. I was a fan of that.

I also like all the little noises that Jak makes. "Hya!!" is probably my favorite. The voice acting is good, too. Daxter's off the wall commentary is amusing, and was enough to prompt the occasional laugh from myself or my son. 




Overall:

This is such a good game. It has held up tremendously well over the years. Right off the bat, the game sucked me in and got me hooked on it. It is so easy to pick up and play. And it never ceases to bring the fun and amusement. Gameplay is littered with small side quests, like fishing or riding your bike. It helps break up the monotony of the standard 3D gameplay. Not that the gameplay ever gets monotonous. I love exploring these big stages and collecting everything there is to collect. Like I said before, this is almost the perfect platformer.

There are only a few things that keep this game from getting a higher grade. Number one has to be the length of the game. After just one playing session with my son, I noticed that I was at 25% completion already. And we had barely been playing an hour or two. The camera can occasionally get in the way, too, not that this is a major complaint. There is a bit of a difficulty spike at the end of the game, too. Lots of precise platforming is required. Like I said, the game is generous with its checkpoints, and there are no lives to worry about. So even this seems like a minor complaint.

I don't like how you have to collect every single power cell to see the game's true ending. I've probably beaten this game a good four or five times in my life, and I've only bothered with 100% completion one time. It just doesn't seem that important to me, given that the game's true ending doesn't really reveal anything anyway. It just shows the mystery gate open, and a bright light shining behind it. Nothing else. So it is barely worth it.

But all my gripes are minor gripes. This is a truly fun game. I'll probably be playing its sequels in the near future, but I can already tell you that I won't like them as much as this. I've played both of them in the past (a long, long time ago) and I was very "meh" on both of them. So as much as I hate to say it, I've already seen the pinnacle of the series. But oh, what a pinnacle it is.

Video Game Review #580: Shadow Dancer

Nostalgia Factor:

As a kid, I enjoyed playing Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi on my Sega Genesis. I did not know that the game was based on an arcade game that was simply titled: Shadow Dancer. I never once encountered this arcade cabinet out in the wild, and I went to a lot of arcades when I was young. 

When I reviewed the Genesis version about four years ago, I gave the game an A-. I found it very fun to play, and I couldn't help myself from repeatedly coming back to it for more. It was around this time that I discovered there was also an arcade version of the game, which was supposedly very different from the Genesis version. I made up my mind as soon as I discovered this: I was going to play that arcade version someday. I didn't know when that day would come, but it would be someday.

And that someday has finally arrived. Keep reading for my full thoughts on this game.




Story:

Absolutely nothing is explained in this game. When the arcade cabinet is in demo mode, it shows a wolf look at the camera and begin barking. And then it says "Shadow Dancer" with fire in the background. And then it shows you a little bit of gameplay. And then it begins to loop.

Once you fire the game up, there are no additional story sequences. You are just thrown into the fire with very brief level descriptions like: "Obstruct the enemy's deadly mission!" That's no help. What it all boils down to is that the game's story (if there even is one) does not matter, in any way whatsoever.




Gameplay:

This is now the fourth Shinobi game I have played, behind the original Shinobi, Shadow Dancer for the Genesis, and The Revenge of Shinobi. It definitely feels different from the other games in the series. It almost feels more like Rolling Thunder than Shinobi. It's weird.

Put in a coin and you are given three lives. Action takes place from a side-scrolling perspective. You walk forward, flinging shurikens at your foes. You have one screen clearing magic attack per life, just like the original Shinobi. You can leap up onto balconies, and leap back down again. It reminds me a lot of Rolling Thunder when you jump up and down between levels. The jumping is like Rolling Thunder. The whole "crouching behind boxes" element is like Rolling Thunder. The whole game just has a very Rolling Thunder-esque vibe that I don't remember the other Shinobi games having.

*edit: I just went back and read my old Shinobi review and in that review, I compared the gameplay to Rolling Thunder. So I guess the parallels have always been there.

Each stage contains a stack of bombs that you have to collect. Once you've found them all, the level exit opens up. Don't worry, you don't have to look to hard to find them. These bombs aren't very well-hidden and you often find them directly on your path as you are making your way to the level exit. You can pick up the occasional power up which gives you added damage to your shurikens. 

I'd be remiss if I did not mention your canine companion. I was not quite sure how to use him at first, as his actions seemed a bit random. I learned that ducking and hitting the shoot button makes the dog run up to the nearest enemy in your sight and attack him. This doesn't kill your opponent, but "ties him up" as he struggles with the dog. You can swoop in for the kill, but you have to do it quickly because if you don't, the dog will take damage and you won't be able to use it for a while.

Aside from the dog, the thing that stands out about this game the most is the difficulty. One hit kills you. Even Ghosts 'n Goblins lets you get hit twice. And there are no checkpoints, so when you die, you have to start at the beginning of the stage again. There are some extremely challenging areas with tough jumps, or enemies swarming you left and right (or both). There is nothing more disheartening than playing through 3/4 of a stage, dying, and then having to go back to the beginning of the stage again. That's going to happen you all the freaking time in this game.

Luckily, I was playing with save states and I was able to "micromanage" my way through the game. Even then, I still had a tough time. There were some areas where I had to reload my save state about 25 times, trying to make it through a particular area. Can you imagine having to pump in all those quarters, and start each of those stages from the beginning again? It not only would have cost a fortune, it would have taken a very long time - if I was able to do it at all. There were some areas where I was like "without save states, this would almost be impossible."

There are four stages in total, each filled with three or four levels. Each one ends with a boss fight. These boss fights are fairly fun, but frustrating just like the rest of the game. I have no freaking idea how you're supposed to beat the final boss without save states. Even using them to save the game after landing one blow on the enemy and retreating, it took me forever to beat the game. You have to be an expert level player to be able to beat this game legitimately.

With enough time and enough patience, I might have been able to turn into one of those kinds of players. Unfortunately, I just don't have that luxury.




Graphics:

This is a good looking game, especially when you consider that it came out in 1989. I couldn't help but be impressed by some of the backgrounds. The characters and animation look really good, too. They could have really ruined the game if they had made the dog look and move stupid, but they nailed it. Bosses are big and creative looking, too.

I wouldn't say this is a visually amazing game or anything, but it definitely nails the vibe it's going for.




Sound:

I played this game for about two hours last night, at the very least. I beat it. I started a new game. I beat it again. And keep in mind that this was just last night.

I don't remember a single thing about the game's music or sound effects. Nothing. Take that as you may.




Overall:

I want to give this game more love than I am about to give it. It looks good. It has a lot of fun ideas. It is entertaining to play. But? It's too damn tough.

Just being tough isn't necessarily a bad thing, but this game just goes way overboard. I was only able to have as enjoyable a time as I did because of save states. If I did not have them, this would have been an absolutely agonizing affair. I'm one of those people that won't review a game until I've beaten it. I can just see myself sitting there, cursing up a storm and throwing my controller trying to beat this game "honestly." I would have fucking hated it.

Luckily, I played the game in a manner in which I was able to enjoy it. But therein lies my dilemma. Do I grade this game based around the fact that I was able to manipulate my progress through save states, or do I grade it based on how the game is intended to be played? That's where I am struggling a bit here - because they would almost be two different grades depending on the playstyle. So let's do this: I'll grade them individually per playstyle, and then use an average of the two grades to make my final grade.

With save states: a fun, entertaining, and challenging game that offers some replay value. I'd give it a B.

Without save states: an initially fun game that quickly becomes too challenging to derive enjoyment from. Beating the game would be an absolute chore, and I'd probably hate myself when I was done with the game. I'd give it a D.

So what's the average between a B and a D? A surprisingly fitting score, I must say. I reserve Cs for games that I am completely "meh" on. Don't like it, don't hate it. It's right in the middle. And that's kind of the way I feel now, after writing this review. I feel like a C is a good score for how I feel about the game. So a C it shall be.

In the commercials, it talks about a man named Vernon Dent who is the supposed man behind the Three Stooges and he guest starred as many different roles on the show. Anyway, Curly wins a $50,000 radio cash prize, and the Stooges go to stay at a fancy hotel. Three widows try to hook up with the Stooges to get their hands on the money. Unfortunately, most of it is taken away in taxes and the Stooges are back to being broke and in trouble again.

ESPN special about a guy with cerebral palsy who runs in high school. He falls down a lot and its funny, but it is supposed to be an inspirational story. Also, ESPN does a countdown of Top Ten missed calls in sports history. Vinny Testaverde's goal line quarterback sneak TD makes the list.

 - Drunk guy in a striped shirt gets stuck trying to climb a fence to get into an old folks home. He was going to visit a guy in a cowboy hat in a wheelchair with weird pale white arms. The wheelchair man says that the drunk is a nuisance and he doesn't want anything to do with him.
 - This is a really weird one. Cops respond to a domestic call where a woman was beating on a man. The guy is really drunk and invites the cops into the house where he shows them all of his snakes. One of the cops, a big bulky black guy, is terrified. The drunk also has this weird altar thingie in his living room with a ballerina doll and a skeleton candle on it.
 - Cop is flagged down by a black man running from another black man. The man who was doing the chasing says that he gave the other guy ten dollars to buy weed and he tried to run off and steal it. The guy who flagged down the police is found with crack on him and goes to jail. The chaser is set free.
 - Another bizarre one. A crazy drunk blonde haired lady is locked inside of a bank. Apparently she fell asleep in the bathroom and they locked her in. From inside the bank she repeatedly calls 911 even though there are cops outside trying to get in. She is freaking out because she wants to smoke a cigarette. Finally the cleaning crew shows up to let her out. The officer smells alcohol on her breath and she says someone threw alcohol on her. She belongs to an old folks home and they take her home at the end of the episode. She is really bizarre.

Entertainment Tonight. Paula previews the next episode of Idol. She seems really drugged up in this clip.

Video Game Review #579: Ico

Nostalgia Factor:

Just to make you aware: this review is for the HD remastered version of Ico, which was released for the PS3 paired with Shadow of the Colossus. I first played the game back in 2014. The original Ico was already 13 years old at that point. I remember little about my time with the game, aside from noticing the similarities between it and Shadow of the Colossus. Other than that, I vaguely remember having a positive impression of the game. I didn't love it. I thought it was simply okay... kind of like how I felt about Shadow of the Colossus. A lot of people seem to love these games, though. I could not figure out what was it that I was missing.

Let's fast forward another 11 years to 2025. I haven't reviewed Ico or returned to it for a second playthrough, so I figured I should finally come back to it and give it another chance. Would I still find the game to be "just alright" or would I find myself siding with the critics? I guess it is time to find out.

In case you were wondering, I returned to Shadow of the Colossus in 2022 and gave the game a B+. So maybe my opinion of this will change?




Story:

I don't really know what's going on in this game's story. You play as Ico, a little boy who wears a horned helmet. For reasons that are never explained in the game, Ico is taken to a castle by a group of soldiers and put inside of a big casket/cage-like device. After the soldiers leave, the device falls down, allowing Ico to escape. Ico discovers a mysterious woman named Yorda, who also seems to be lost inside this mysterious castle.

Ico takes Yorda's hand and they leave the room, determined to find a way out of the castle. Along the way, they encounter these scary, shadowy creatures that crawl out of holes in the ground. It seems they are intent on capturing Yorda and dragging her through these holes back to... wherever it is they came from. At the end of the game, Ico discovers that an evil Queen is dying, and she is trying to transport her consciousness into Yorda's body, so that she can take it over. Ico defeats the queen, and he and Yorda escape to safety. This is only the extreme barebones version of things, but I'm not one who focuses on in-depth story analysis when I do these reviews.

I'm sure if you looked on Reddit or Wikipedia, you could probably find a more accurate and detailed synopsis of the game's story. But as I always make clear in my reviews: I only talk about what is actually shown in the game. Maybe there is more to the story in the game's manual, or maybe there is more to the story on the game's website. I didn't see any of it, though. If it isn't in the game itself, to me it does not exist.

Before we move on, I will add that I've also played The Last Guardian in addition to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. I vaguely remember The Last Guardian tying into this game, but I don't remember how. To be fair, I last played that game 7 years and 447 reviews ago. So excuse me if my memory is a little bit hazy.




Gameplay:

This game is probably a bit different from what you are used to playing. It's not really an action game, but it's not really a platformer either. I'd describe it as a single player co-op puzzle game, with the occasional combat segment thrown in for good measure. Single player co-op? How is that possible, you may ask?

Simple. You aren't just in charge of your own character, Ico, but you are in charge of Yorda, too. You don't actually control Yorda, but you can order her around. Stop, follow, that kind of thing. You can also grab her by the hand and pull her where she needs to be. The whole point of the game is moving forward through this castle, solving puzzles so that you can advance Yorda (who is far less athletically inclined than Ico) to the next area of the game.

When I first played this back in 2014, I was a little confused by the structure of the game. I thought the whole castle was open to explore, and I quickly found myself getting overwhelmed by protecting Yorda. I immediately turned to an online strategy guide for help. Turns out, I was simply just overthinking things. This game is fairly linear and straightforward. Sure, there are some parts where you can get lost or you have to backtrack, but in no way is this game as complex as I had initially made it out to be.

Puzzles include moving blocks around for Yorda to climb on, throwing switches that open doors, lighting torches to unlock secret areas, and creating bridges for her to cross. That kind of thing. You're really just trying to get her from point A to point B. Occasionally you have to wander off and leave her alone. You can't go away for too long or she will fall under attack from the shadow creatures. If you don't get back to her in time, the game ends and you have to go back to the last save point. This always makes leaving Yorda behind a very dangerous proposition. But alas, sometimes it simply has to be done.

There are not very many combat sections in the game. Fighting is not really what this game is about. But when you do go into combat, you'll find that all it really entails is pointing Ico at a bad guy and hitting the attack button. You can hit enemies with a combo of sword attacks. Hit them enough times and they die. Once you clear an area of enemies, they do not come back again (unless you leave Yorda unattended). When a shadow creature grabs Yorda, you don't need to panic. It will take Yorda to one of the black portals in the ground and drop her in. You have a good minute or so to grab her hand and pull her out. The only time I ever "lost" in combat is when a creature flew her to a hole alllll the way on the other side of the map when I was outside, and I was not able to run all the way over her and get her in time.

The game is relatively short, clocking in under ten hours. There were a few points in the game where I'd reach an area with a head scratching puzzle. I unashamedly turned to the internet for assistance. I am in my 40s and life is too short for me now to get stuck when playing a game. I don't have an endless amount of hours to power my way through it. And you know what? I'm totally okay with that. Games are meant to be fun, not frustrating.




Graphics:

This isn't the prettiest game ever made, even remastered on the PS3. It's very dark and gritty. There is not much to look at. Lots of bricks and decaying castle walls. Where the game shines is in its atmosphere. No, it may not look pretty, but damn if this doesn't deliver an extremely immersive environment for its players. Shadow of the Colossus is very similar in this regard, although I'd argue that that game is much better looking.




Sound:

The game sounds great. Again, very atmospheric. There are many silent areas in the game, the only noise being the sound of your shoes echoing on the ground. It really helps add to the dark, almost oppressive atmosphere of the game. 

Using Ico's voice commands, you can call out for Yorda. Expect to hear Ico's voice quite a bit as you are playing. While it may be annoying hearing one character call out the same thing for hours and hours on end, the annoyance is masked by the fact that your character is speaking a language that was made up for the game. I don't know why that makes it less annoying, but it does. I can't imagine listening to "over here" or "come on" for the entire duration of the game. But for some reason, "berrrrn!" is perfectly fine.




Overall:

I want to like this game more than I do. I like the concept of the game, and I like the presentation and the atmosphere of the game. But is it actually fun to play? That's where I keep going back and forth. The game can be fun to play. There were times I was enjoying myself and I was really "into" the action. There were other times that were incredibly annoying and frustrating, however.

There are a few certain puzzles in the second half of the game that really killed my enjoyment of the game. One involves an elevator that you take, and you have to leave Yorda behind while you swing across ropes and try to navigate to an area where you can drop a block down for her to climb up on. I died multiple times in this area. Got to do it all over again. Then I died again after completing everything and making my way back to Yorda. Very frustrating. There's another area where you have to leave her behind for a while, and I was one room from solving the puzzle when she was attacked by the shadow creatures and I had to backtrack to save her. I didn't make it back in time. If I had just kept going, in the next room was a switch that would have unlocked where I needed to go next. Had to do that all over again.

The final boss was annoying, too. It was a nice concept, but I died on my first attempt and had to do a lot of backtracking to get back to her. And then I died again because of some BS. I think I died a few times, actually. Lots of backtracking. And then when I finally did beat her, the game froze. I said F this and just watched the ending on YouTube. 

So yeah. My thought on this game are very mixed. Like I said, I wish I liked it more than I did. It has so many things going for it. It just falls a little bit short for me. I can acknowledge this as being a slightly above average title, but that's about as far as I am willing to go.
