So continues my ranking of every movie I watched in 2014. Down and out are movies #118 to #100. We resume this update at #99. The first update consisted mainly of movies that bored the crap out of me and/or put me to sleep. Expect more of the same here, as we still have yet to crack the movies that I truly enjoyed last year. Most of these I managed to stay awake for, however. I have a very short attention span and most of the movies that will show up on this current update are movies that were not necessarily bad, but could not hold my attention for some reason or another.
#99
Pacific Rim
On the surface this seems like something I would really enjoy. And I did, at the beginning. As the movie progressed, I gradually started losing interest and doing other things. I don't know if it was because the movie wasn't good, or if it was because I was just not in the mood to watch it. I can barely remember what happens in the second half of this movie. I do plan to give it another shot sometime though. If I don't like it upon rewatch, then I will know for sure that this movie just isn't for me.
#98
Insidious 2
I was a big fan of the original Insidious. I watched it by myself, in the dark, with headphones on. And a miracle happened. That movie legitimately scared me. I never get scared by anything anymore.
This is why the sequel is such a disappointment. Much like the Ring 2 managed to lose all the magic of the original film, the same thing happens here. It's not scary. It's not memorable. I could barely even tell you what happened in this movie.
#97
Robocop
As mentioned earlier in this ranking, I actually don't mind remakes. I am an avid fan of the original Robocop and had high hopes that this would be good. Unfortunately, it isn't. It is not terrible, it just isn't that enjoyable. It suffers from the same problems that the Total Recall reboot does. It takes itself too seriously. Robocop is supposed to be fun. darn it.
And as much as I like Joel Kinnaman (the Killing 4 lyfe yo) I think he is a poor fit in this role. He basically IS Detective Holder in this movie. And that took me out of it a little bit also.
#96
Lovelace
I probably should like this movie more. Because - you know - porn and everything. But I thought it was depressing and really not that interesting. Maybe if I had grown up when this had actually happened I would have found it more interesting. But I didn't.
#95
The Bear
I have seen this movie a handful of times now. And each time I see it, my opinion seems to differ. Originally a few years ago I thought this was really good. Watching it now - it had its moments. The mama bear dying. The baby bear eating mushrooms and tripping out. But overall I was kinda bored. There is very little dialogue in the film. The story with the hunters is nothing special. No matter how cute it is, you can only watch a little baby bear wander around for so long before it gets a little boring.
#94
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
This movie always gets criticized for being one of the worst Star Trek movies. I have seen it in the past, and used to like it. Having watched the original series and all the other movies to date, I can now see where the criticism is coming from. This really is not a good movie. I gave it a fair shot. I came in with the mindset that I was going to enjoy it. With a little extra work, this movie could have been decent. But it fell flat. I wasn't a huge fan.
#93
12 Years A Slave
I will probably get massacred for this opinion. but I didn't think this was that good. I watched this immediately after finishing the book. It's a faithful retelling of the book. Maybe a little too faithful? I couldn't help but be a bit bored. The book was the genuine article - written by the man this happened to. It was from the heart. This movie felt like an attempt by Hollywood to cash in on something tragic.
I also didn't like the sex stuff that happens at the beginning of the movie. That didn't happen in the book and I thought it completely set the wrong kind of tone for the whole movie.
#92
Prisoners
I like the basic premise of the movie. But things moved a little too slowly for me. I was often bored while watching this, and eventually started to lose interest. I remember there being some kind of twist at the end but by then I was too out of it to really care or remember what happened. Maybe I will give it another chance some day.
#91
Capote
I was a big fan of the book In Cold Blood. So naturally I was excited to see this movie. Unfortunately the film less follows the book and more follows Capote's personal life as he researches and writes the book. The movie spends more time focusing on his relationship with one of the killers than it does with the actual killings themselves. I was not really interested in that aspect of the story, and became kinda bored. His voice drove me nuts too. I could just not take him seriously at all sounding like that.
#90
Man Of Steel
I have never been a huge Superman fan. I much prefer Batman. The Avengers, The X-Men, etc. But I was intrigued by the prospect of a series reboot. Maybe this would be the movie that would finally make me like Superman. Not really. This movie took itself far too seriously, was too long, and was very boring in parts. I can barely remember anything about it. As much as I wanted to like it, I really didn't.
#89
Ender's Game
Despite all the good things I had heard about the book Ender's Game - I read it and was far from impressed. I thought potentially it could translate to a good movie though, so I gave this a shot. Technically, it looks very nice. The special effects are great. The environments are very impressive. I just found it very hard to get involved in the story, and found my mind wandering off and on throughout the film. I almost fell asleep getting through this, and in fact I think I did take a long intermission since I needed a break from it halfway through.
#88
Rocky V
The Rocky movies up to this point had followed a very predictable format. While I appreciate that this movie attempted to do something different, it didn't feel like a true Rocky movie to me. It needed more fun and more action. And there was really no big feel good moment in this movie. For the most part it was pretty boring to me.
#87
Honey, I Shrunk The Kids
I genuinely like this movie, and normally it would rank higher on a list like this. Unfortunately, for whatever reason I had a hard time getting into this movie this time around. I tried to pay attention and give it my all, but it was just not happening. I kept getting restless and coming online - and that kind of wrecked my enjoyment of the film.
#86
The Dark Half
I like the book. I wanted to like the movie. The movie just isn't very well produced or well acted. It was pretty slow moving and I was bored for a good portion of it. There are some good things about the film. George Stark is cool. Some of the killings and things are interesting. The basic story is good. But there are simply too many glaring flaws to warrant a ranking higher than this. The swarm of birds at the end of the movie is particularly cringe worthy.
#85
Back To The Future III
I am a fan of the Back To The Future series as a whole. But this third film in the series is really not good. All the complexity of time travel and the excitement of the first two movies is lost here. Sure there are some "fun" chase scenes. The old West is a perfect setting for this kind of film, and a nice change of pace from the others. But it is a bit too little kid-like for my tastes. Like the series had been dumbed down for this final installment. And the ending with the train and the kids is awful. Overall a disappointing end for a great series.
#84
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
This movie serves as a lead in to the TV series. It sets the stage for the show and introduces a lot of the main characters. It's basically one very long episode of the show. I like the Clone Wars, but I have never been too overly enthusiastic about it. I'm not a fan of the prequel movies, and this is basically just another of them except in animated form. Maybe it's a little bit better.
#83
Helter Skelter
I became very interested in the Manson killings in 2014. I had read the book Helter Skelter and naturally wanted to see the movie because of it. I didn't know there were two versions of the film, and I ended up getting this one, which is a made for TV movie. As a result, it isn't as gruesome or explicit as it could have been. It is low budget and very tame and watered down, which is a let down. There were also a lot of inconsistencies with what actually happened, and that bugged me. At least it was interesting and not totally boring. And Jeremy Davies puts on a pretty good performance as Manson himself. But it could have been so much better. Hollywood needs to make a decent Manson movie for this day and age.
#82
Oculus
I like the premise of this story, about an evil mirror that makes people go on crazy killing sprees. It had potential to be really good. There are some genuinely creepy parts in this film that had me on edge. But I have to say that overall it was a letdown. This movie does some things right, but not enough of them. I was bored for a good portion of this. And the ending and the way things unfolded in the second half was pretty unsatisfactory to me.
#81
Rocky III
Being a big fan of the first two Rocky movies, I expected better from this one. The whole movie had an "off" feel to it. The battle with Hulk Hogan was just sheer stupidity. The second half is better than the first. The Mr T. plot and Rocky's training with Apollo Creed are the best parts about this movie. But it felt so much more generic and less heartfelt than the first two Rocky movies. And as a result I didn't like it as much.
#80
Captain America: Winter Soldier
I am a fan of the original Captain America movie. And I like the Avengers. That said, this movie sucks the life and the fun out of Captain America. It takes itself way too seriously and hovers of the edge of boredom with its complex conspiracy plot. I wanted more fun, more action. It needed to be a little bit more light hearted. He needed to be in the suit more and pummel some more bad guys. The lack of a decent villain hurt too. I didn't dislike the movie, but I didn't particularly have fun watching it either.
